Wrapping up Day Zero (for now at least)
Over three months ago, I posted the last monthly update about my Day Zero (101 things in 1001 days) project. I started DZ just a few months after moving into my "new" house, and right after my younger daughter graduated from high school, starting on July 1, 2010 and ending on March 29, 2013, presuming I counted the days correctly. I had a lot of life-revising to do back then. Sort of like re-starting your computer from scratch. A "cold boot" in [old-fashioned] computer terms.
I knew I needed to create structure in my new life, hence "newfutureahead" (this blog was one of my 101 things) so the ready-made structure of the Day Zero Project was appealing. I fashioned my list to combine a "to do" list, a few "bucket list"-type projects, and a number of aspirational goals, as well as a couple of things I hoped to do often enough to become a habit.
After I jotted down a number of ideas, I found that my best approach was to categorize them. During my 1001 days, I completed all 8 that were labelled "Financial/Legal", all 4 "Entertainment" (I surpassed my number of books to read and movies to watch relatively early in the process), and finished all but one of the 9 "Family and Friends" goals. The last of those was to help D#1 get her driver's license which didn't fall inside the deadline, but has since been accomplished!
Only 18 of my goals remained untouched at the close of the project! Almost half that number, in "Home Improvement" or "Recreation," were not undertaken because of physical or financial limitations. The rest were mostly "Education/Self-Development", though there were two unstarted quilts in "Hobbies" and one entry under "Charitable/Religious" that was never available to me within the time frame. I made some degree of progress on 6 other goals, mostly related to "Health," on which I know I need more focus.
Overall, DZ was a positive experience for me, helping me to do just what I set out to do: get specific things done while remaking my life in a larger sense. I'm beginning to put together a list for a follow-up DZ project, to begin at some unspecified future date. About a third of that list will be the unfinished (and un-begun) items from DZ1, along with a number of actions that I want to keep doing actively. With my younger daughter beginning her senior year of college in about 5 weeks, there will be more re-structuring to do before long.
For the one or two of you who read here, my blog isn't going away. I hope to do some catch up posts that are travel- or quilt-related, and then to try to be more regular in posting. See you soon!

Progress report: month 19 (January 2012)
Sometimes it feels like I'm not gettinganywhere, though not for lack of effort!
January was one of "those" months
when it seemed like everything was a
moving target. D#2 was home for the
first few weeks, then, within 48 hours:
I took her back to school, D#1 arrived,
and I drove HER back to DC. At the
end of that week, I was off to Dallas
and it took the next week to get my
bearings being alone at home again!
Settling back in and trying to focus.
Completed:

75. Cut last box of scrap fabric.
Extra quilts: Bricks & Stepping Stones: finish binding

Mid course changes:
When I reached Day 500, I decided to re-evaluate my original list and allow myself to alter items if I had decided I no longer wanted to do what I'd originally written. I resisted the idea of just adding more quilts to the list (wink!) and disciplined myself to stay in the same category.

34. Purchase stationery bike for basement (Health)
47. Make photo collage of D#2 for Dr. S. (Family/Friends)
REPLACED WITH:
24. Hang photos of daughters in upstairs hall
34. Do 20 mins of machines at LAF at least 3 times a month
47. Go over digital photos and have prints made
As a reward for reading this post, which is irrelevant to all of you.... a more recent photo of my kittens!

A milestone -- or two
Friday marked the 500th day of my Day Zero (aka 101 things in 1001 days) project and the day before that was my birthday. Seems like a good time for reflection.
Day Zero is coming along well. I'm working away at some of the larger projects and have completed many others. The sole remaining goal under Legal/Financial is to make a will, which I want to accomplish before the end of the year. The items that have a price tag, particularly travel, are the ones that linger, quite expectedly. I have discovered that some other things aren't really important, or I've changed my mind entirely. I'm going to give myself a "do-over" to make a few revisions to the List in the next few days.
It's true that I'm a list-maker and find satisfaction in checking off the individual tasks. But the larger goal of the List was to help me focus on making a future by figuring out some of the actions I could take that would put me on the path to being a now-single, more-than-middle-aged woman with an almost empty nest. I wanted to identify activities I enjoy and encourage myself to do them, to think of others that I've wanted to do and push myself to try them, to take concrete action to make my new house into a welcoming place of comfort and peace for my children, my friends, and -- most of all -- me. Progress is being made on all these mini-goals, I think.
Adjusting to my life as a single person, living alone, has been something of a challenge. I don't lack for things to do (quilt, read, watch movies on DVD, etc.) and I generally enjoy my own company. But it's easy to slip into the habit of withdrawing from people and outside-the-house activities. Given my newfound free time, it would have been easy to over-commit, but I have been careful not to do so. However, there are times when my solitude slips into loneliness.
The addition of Sassy and Smidgen to the household has infused a giant portion of joy into my life, a feeling that has been rare for a couple of years now. I am enjoying their presence and their affection so much I talk about them, even at the risk of being thought a "crazy cat lady". And they are one more step in creating a new life, linked to, but separate from the one I had a few short years ago, which I never expected would end as it did. Another step forward.
